Introducing Old Cedar Native Arts, an online shop dedicated to Indigenous arts!

We offer a curated selection of jewelry, art prints, greeting cards, and natural skincare products. The business is owned and operated by Navajo artist and beadworker, Carolyn L. Anderson. Carolyn has been working with Indigenous artists for almost 2 decades, participating in group art shows, curating exhibits, and becoming a buyer of Native American art and jewelry at Birchbark Books in Minneapolis where she worked for 16 years.

In 2019, Carolyn co-founded the online shop, formerly known as Birchbark Native Arts, with Louise Erdrich as a subsidiary of her bookstore, Birchbark Books. The idea of the shop is to showcase the quality, sophistication and beauty of work being produced by some of the most talented Indigenous artists today.

In 2024, ownership rights were transferred to Carolyn and she rebranded the online shop as Old Cedar Native Arts. The name evolved from Louise asking what is her favorite tree and it is also the street that Carolyn lived on when she decided to become a business owner. Carolyn sees the shop as an outlet for Indigenous creatives, including herself. Old Cedar Native Arts provides a selling platform for artists, giving them more visibility in the digital realm while also providing a credible source of information to the broader public to learn about Native American art.

A unique aspect of Old Cedar Native Arts is the selection and the aesthetic. Being that Carolyn is an artist herself, it is important that the browsing experience is pleasing to her customers. Everything from the photographs to the website design to the curation of products is thoughtfully chosen and arranged. The website also offers a line of products that you can purchase virtually nowhere else, which are Carolyn's beaded earrings. As they have become increasingly popular in the last couple of years, her earrings are usually only sold through her Etsy shop, but she has also sold them at the Whitney Museum Shop in NYC and the Guthrie Theater Store in Minneapolis. Carolyn beads earrings with some of the tiniest glass seed beads available on the market today. Because it takes so long to finish a pair, she makes them to order. See the made to order beadwork section for more information. You can also learn more about Carolyn’s mixed media artwork in the art print and greeting card sections.
